If you want to help someone, don’t tell them five things. Tell them one.
Your ego wants to tell them five because it makes you feel smart. But they need one because that’s how many things you can try at the same time to make an improvement.
So if someone asks you for help, you need to decide if you want to feel good or if you want to help.
And if you decide to help then set aside all of the things you could tell them that would make you feel cool. And tell them the one thing they could do to move forward.
If you do this, you’ll get to have the more consistent joy of seeing them succeed over the long run instead of the dopamine hit of impressing them with everything you know that won’t help them.
