You can’t operate from a moral high ground that makes you weak.
We do many things to make ourselves look better. And some of those actions make us strong and some make us weak.
Very often, we will take on a viewpoint because it’s popular that makes us feel worse on the inside.
But it’s possible to do and say things that make you feel stronger on the inside. To do that, you’ll have to deal with the uncomfortable interactions that come from saying something that might not sit well with the other person.
But if you speak the words that feel right to you and build you up, then every interaction will make you stronger, and you will become more and more capable of dealing with those experiences. This, makes you look good in the long run.
But looking good by taking on an appearance of virtue to others that slowly undermines your belief in yourself does the opposite. It’s a zero sum game that makes you less and less of yourself until you don’t have the strength to hold on to your own beliefs. Don’t sacrifice substance for appearance. Sacrifice appearance for substance, and the appearance you want will come over time.
